For each city we saved 20 hotels from ChatGPT (shown as GPT-5.6 Sol, Extra High), 20 from Claude (shown as Opus 4.8, High) and 20 Google Maps results collected through Apify. Each count below is within one city. The cities are never added together.

Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium, Amsterdam (ChatGPT) and Conservatorium Hotel (Claude) count as one hotel in this comparison, because their saved street evidence matches.
The earlier name-only comparison kept those two names apart and found 14 of 20 hotels in both AI lists. That result stands unchanged, below.

This compares the two lists saved on 1 November 2026, read after the fact (post hoc). It is not a controlled comparison. Under the rules we fixed before the study, neither answer counts as a controlled result, because in each answer the written table and the saved list did not match exactly. Claude ran in a regular new chat with its memory switch off, not the Incognito chat the checklist required. Claude's full answer text was not identical between its two reads; it matched once a relative time label was removed. ChatGPT was asked first and Claude 3 min 28 s later.
Amsterdam was also asked on 26 and 30 October 2026. Neither date gave a finished ChatGPT list to compare, so no figure here comes from them.
Our earlier AI-only analysis matched hotels by name, so it counted Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium, Amsterdam (ChatGPT, rank 8) and Conservatorium Hotel (Claude, rank 3) as two hotels. Same hotel, different details
Known to both, described differently
For Orania.Berlin and The Hoxton, Charlottenburg the two assistants gave different street addresses for the same property. For Hotel de Rome, SO/ Berlin Das Stue, Hotel Arts Barcelona, Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona and Serras Barcelona they linked different website hosts as the official one. In Amsterdam on 1 November, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam and InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam had different hosts. The host is recorded as captured; this is not a check of which site is official.

How we measured
Obenan Research designed, ran and checked this exploratory study and is responsible for its claims. It is not peer reviewed.
The question and the apps
On 26 October 2026 we put the same question, "What are the 20 best hotels in <city>?", to the consumer apps of ChatGPT (shown as GPT-5.6 Sol, Extra High) and Claude (shown as Opus 4.8, High), once per city. Each answer was saved with its order and links before anything else was asked.
In Berlin and Barcelona, entries were matched by name, address and official website. Our earlier AI-only analysis matched the Amsterdam lists of 1 November by name only, so differently worded names stayed apart. The Google Maps comparison matches hotels by their saved street addresses and lists any hotel it cannot identify for sure beside its results.
The evidence comes from different dates: Google search on 24 October, Google Maps attempts on 25 October, the assistants' answers on 26 October, and the Amsterdam answers on 30 October and 1 November 2026. No date is a baseline for another.
The links behind the answers
Each list came with source links. On 26 October every Berlin and Barcelona entry carried at least one. Berlin: ChatGPT showed 58 links, Claude 52. Barcelona: ChatGPT 56, Claude 35.
Links an assistant gave later, when asked why it chose each hotel, are its stated reasons, not a record of how the list was made. Matching domains does not prove matching pages.
What this evidence cannot tell you
- Not why a hotel was chosen. The study records what each assistant listed. It finds no ranking formula and cannot say whether a cited page led to a pick.
- Not whether the answer would repeat. Each question was asked once on each date. Asked again, on another day or in other words, an assistant may answer differently.
- Not the whole market. Three cities and one question describe these answers, not every traveller, city or hotel.
- Not a Google Maps ranking comparison. We captured no usable order from Google Maps itself. The saved Google Maps results, collected through Apify, are compared as a set, without their order.
- Not current business facts. Names are as the assistants wrote them. Nothing here verifies current trading names, ownership or quality.
- Not a controlled Amsterdam comparison. Under the rules we fixed before the study, neither 1 November answer counts as a controlled result, and the unfinished ChatGPT answers of 26 and 30 October give no ranking.
